1494년, 카스티야와 포르투갈은 토르데시야스 조약을 체결하고 카보베르데 제도에서 서쪽으로 370리그 떨어진 지점을 기준으로 대서양의 세력권을 나누기로 합의했습니다. 경계선 동쪽은 포르투갈, 서쪽은 카스티야의 영역으로 정해졌으며, 이후 아메리카와 대서양을 둘러싼 두 나라의 해외 진출에 큰 영향을 미쳤습니다.
